The Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas has awarded a grant to help support free Childbirth Classes offered by Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. The grant has purchased new teaching tools and videos that will be utilized in Childbirth Classes for expectant parents. Instructor Kelci McVey will host her next class November 13th and 14th at CRMC. Class is scheduled from 9 am – 4 pm on Saturday and 1 pm – 4 pm on Sunday.

These classes prepare the mother and father (or other support person) emotionally, physically and intellectually for active participation in the birthing process. The course includes relaxation exercises, what to expect during labor and delivery, breathing and pushing techniques and care after birth, including breastfeeding. To register for the November class or a future class, parents may contact Director of Women’s Health Jen Wintjen at 620.252.1589 or register at the Women’s Health Clinic located at 1717 W. 8th Street in Coffeyville.

CRMC Foundation Announces the Han Educational Scholarship Award Winners

The Coffeyville Regional Medical Center (CRMC) Foundation has awarded five students the Dr. and Mrs. Chan S. Han Family Educational Scholarships.  The students awarded (in alphabetical order) are Amber Bird, Bryce Brown, Alice Hite, Viridiana Ornealas, and Sara Wellington.

“We are thankful that the CRMC Foundation encourages our employees who are pursuing healthcare careers,” said CRMC CEO Brian Lawrence.  “We are blessed to have amazing donors like the Han Family who generously donate and support the next generation of healthcare workers.”

Amber Bird is currently a monitor technician at CRMC and is pursuing her Nursing degree at Rogers State University.

Bryce Brown is currently an EMT at CRMC working on his Paramedic degree at Coffeyville Community College.

Alice Hite works as a Registered Nurse in the CRMC Primary Care Clinic and is pursuing her Bachelor of Nursing from Pittsburg State University.

Viridiana Ornelas works as a Certified Nurse Assistant on the Acute Care floor at CRMC.  She is pursuing her Nursing degree at CCC.

Sara Wellington is a lab assistant at CRMC.  She will be pursuing her Medical Laboratory Science degree from George Washington University.

Dr. Chan Han began practicing in Coffeyville in 1974 and retired in 2014.  For forty years, he served the community as a dedicated Pediatrician taking care of multiple generations.  The Dr. and Mrs. Chan S. Han Family Fund was established by Dr. and Mrs. Han’s sons: Dr. Yong Y. Han, Dr. Yong S. Han and Y. Sam Han in honor of their parents and as a way to give back to the community they love and call their hometown.

Logan & Flanders Receive the Stephen Ellis Memorial Scholarship

The Coffeyville Regional Medical Center Foundation was proud to award Field Kindley High School students Jakiia Logan and Breanna Flanders the Stephen Ellis Memorial Scholarship for the 2021-22 academic year.  These students excelled academically and both indicated a desire to serve in the medical field caring for others.

The Dr. Stephen Ellis Memorial Scholarship was established in 1985 through gifts made by Dr. Ellis’s friends, family, and colleagues to honor his memory.  Dr. Ellis was a long-time Coffeyville physician who dedicated his life to enhancing the status of the health and education of the people of Coffeyville.  Through this memorial scholarship, the giving spirit Dr. Ellis continues to provide care for the people of Coffeyville.

This scholarship is awarded each year to Field Kindley High School students who excel academically and are seeking a career in healthcare.

CRMC Foundation Accepting Han Scholarship Applications

The Coffeyville Regional Medical Center (CRMC) Foundation announces that they are accepting scholarship applications to the Dr. and Mrs. Chan S. Han Healthcare Education Fund until June 18th.  The Han family established this opportunity for CRMC employees and local community residents to provide access to education and training in the medical field so they may serve the community.  CRMC employees and students from the community who are pursuing education in a healthcare-related field may apply.

Scholarship applications can be attained on the CRMC website at www.crmcinc.org under the Foundation tab or by emailing Lisa Kuehn at lkuehn@crmcinc.org.  The applicant must complete the CRMC Foundation Scholarship Application and other requirements of the Han Family Scholarship.

CRMC Foundation Announces the Han Family Departmental Awards

In celebration of Dr. Han’s birthday, the Coffeyville Regional Medical Center (CRMC) Foundation has awarded three Dr. and Mrs. Chan S. Han Family Scholarship Awards for training and equipment.  Following the passion of the Han Family, awards were made to departments to increase their department training for associates or enhance equipment within their department.

“Dr. Han practiced in our community for over 40 years and his commitment to the community continues today through the CRMC Foundation,” said Foundation Director Lisa Kuehn. “We are thankful for the Han family’s generosity and dedication to CRMC and the community that we serve.”

Since the fund’s inception in 2003, the Han family has poured over $40,000 into CRMC.  Their generosity has allowed many CRMC departments to offer better technology and utilize advanced training at our community hospital. Awards of the Han Family Departmental Scholarships for 2021 will go to Nursing, Clinical Education and the Rehabilitation Department.

The CRMC Nursing Team will receive a new device that assists nurses in locating veins not always visible to the naked eye for IV starts.  This device called the AccuVein was trialed in our hospital by several nurses with great success.

The Clinical Education department will receive a training manikin for nurse education.  The manikin will be used for hands-on clinical application in the orientation process as well as mock codes and patient care drills.

The CRMC Rehabilitation Department will receive a grant for the purchase of therapeutic equipment and developmental appropriate toys to enhance their current therapy practices. The equipment will focus on fine and gross motor skills as well as sensory processing skills and speech and language development.

The CRMC Foundation is Accepting Applications to the Best Family Scholarship Fund

Coffeyville Regional Medical Center (CRMC) Foundation is accepting applications for the Best Family Scholarship until March 31, 2021. The intent of the scholarship is to provide financial assistance to students that have been accepted into a degreed medical field program (for example, but not limited to: paramedic, lab, x-ray, nursing, medicine, etc).

The Best Family Scholarship was created by the children of Jerry and Norma Best in memory of their father and to honor their mother. Over the last several years, the family has worked together at a variety of fundraisers to enhance their scholarship fund and in 2020 the family was able to endow their scholarship fund so that the Best Family Scholarship will continue for years to come. This scholarship has been awarded since 2015 and ten recipients have been assisted, many over multiple years to complete their educational goals.

The Foundation Scholarship Application can be attained on the CRMC website at www.crmcinc.org/foundation/campaigns-scholarships/ or by emailing Lisa Kuehn at lkuehn@crmcinc.org.

Applicants are asked to submit a 500 word reflective essay on why they chose to pursue a career in healthcare.  They must also submit school transcripts that reflect past grades. The Best Scholarship Committee is comprised of healthcare professionals from the Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri.  They may award multiple winners and applicants who have been awarded previously are encouraged to apply each year they are enrolled and will be considered for awards over multiple years.

CRMC Foundation Announces the Dr. and Mrs. Wilson Associate Education Fund

The CRMC Foundation is pleased to announce the Dr. and Mrs. James Wilson Associate Education Fund.  The Wilson Fund will be dedicated to providing specialized training and educational opportunities for CRMC associates.  This fund will assist CRMC associates in pursuing training that goes above and beyond the certifications required for their position.

“It is truly a gift when you have donors like the Wilson family who understand the value of education for our associates,” said Coffeyville Regional Medical Center CEO Brian Lawrence.  “This fund will allow us to support our employees as they grow individually to better serve our patients and community.”

Dr. and Mrs. James Wilson arrived in Coffeyville, Kansas in 1971.  Dr. Wilson came to CRMC to be the first CRMC pathologist and manage our lab for the community hospital.  Dr. and Mrs. Wilson were passionate about recruiting others to the community and spent many hours personally recruiting physicians and healthcare professionals to the CRMC team and the community.

“Listening to Mrs. Wilson talk about the history of our hospital, you really come to understand how pivotal each and every person has been in the building of our community hospital,” said Foundation Director Lisa Kuehn. “I’m extremely grateful for those who have had the forethought to understand what our community would need and how to get us there.  Appreciating our past and all of our history is a tremendous part of moving forward.  I am extremely grateful for the Wilsons and all the others who have given tirelessly to CRMC.”

The Wilsons have always been passionate about serving others and investing in others as they pursue their educational goals. The Wilsons’ raised five sons who now live throughout the United States: Robert, David, Charles, William, and George.

After Dr. Wilson’s passing in 2006, Mrs. Wilson stayed in Coffeyville, declaring it her hometown.  She is passionate about serving others and is an avid horticulturist.

Amber Bird is currently a monitor technician at CRMC and is pursuing her Nursing degree at Rogers State University.  Abby Ewing is a Liberty, Kansas native pursuing her Kinesiology degree at Kansas State University following her Bachelor of Science she will start working toward her Doctor of Physical Therapy.

Megan Lafferty is currently a Certified Nurse Aide at CRMC and currently enrolled at Coffeyville Community College in the Nursing program.

Samson Mah is a recent graduate of Independence High School pursuing a Pre-Medicine degree at the University of Kansas.

Maria Payne is currently a Radiologic Technologist Aide at CRMC attending Labette Community College to attain her degree in Radiography.

Olivia VanAnne is currently a Registered Nurse for CRMC pursuing her Bachelor of Nursing at Rogers State University.

CRMC Foundation Announces the Grant Award from the Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas

The Coffeyville Regional Medical Center (CRMC) Foundation is proud to announce award of a grant from the Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas for our pediatric patients facing developmental delays.  This grant allows the CRMC Rehabilitation Team to assess patients and offer the oral motor tools they need and might otherwise not be able to afford. Currently, over 80% of the pediatric patients come from low-income families with limited financial resources.

CRMC serves children born with developmental delays and other unspecified disorders.

“I see children with limited abilities to chew and swallow,” said Speech-Language Pathologist, Gail Billman. “This may be caused by decreased motor movements or sensory issues in which they may tolerate only one texture. Using food and non-food therapy tools are basic-necessities in therapy.  My goal in working with feeding problems is to help the child not only learn how to use their muscles for eating and speech, but also improve their nutritional intake.  Children need a well-balanced diet and adequate caloric intake in order for their brains to develop.”

Improvements with research in the field of speech-language pathology and those that work as feeding specialists have developed a wide variety of successful tools to enhance oral motor skills necessary for feeding, swallowing, and further speech development.

The CRMC speech-language pathologist works closely with referring physicians to determine needed intervention.  Following evaluation and during ongoing intervention with a speech-language pathologist, these tools are recommended to families.

“Many families cannot afford or gain quick access for therapy tools.  This grant will allow us to have a stock supply of materials available and provide immediate intervention to our families,” says Billman.

CRMC Foundation Announces the Han Family Departmental Awards

The Coffeyville Regional Medical Center (CRMC) Foundation has awarded three Dr. and Mrs. Chan S. Han Family Scholarship Awards for training and equipment within Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.  Following the passion of the Han Family, awards were made to departments that wanted to increase their department training for associates or enhance equipment within their department.

Awards of the Han Family Departmental Scholarships will go to the Wound Care Clinic, the CRMC Medical Group Pediatric Clinic and CRMC Rehabilitation Department.

“We are forever grateful at CRMC for the legacy of learning and support that the Han Family is providing for our staff,” said Chief Nursing Officer Sarah Hoy. “Generosity like this allows us to continue to serve our patients with modern, evidence based high quality healthcare.”

The CRMC Wound Care Clinic will send one of their nurses to get additional training and certification in Hyperbaric Chamber Treatments.  Hyperbaric medicine helps the body repair wounds and fight infection.  Patients breathe 100% pure oxygen while in a special pressurized chamber.  This improves healing by allowing greater amounts of oxygen to dissolve in the bloodstream and reach body tissues.

The Pediatric Clinic will have a new Spot Vision Screener for use with pediatric patients. Preventative screening and early intervention are imperative to the growth and development of infants and children.  Providing instrument-based vision screening, in addition to traditional acuity testing, will enhance screening, diagnosis, and treatment to allow for intervention at a much earlier age.   It is estimated that one in five preschool-age children have a vision disorder.

The CRMC Rehabilitation Department will focus on training and resources to expand their knowledge and resources for helping patients on the Autism Spectrum.  The current patient base of the Rehabilitation department includes approximately 32% of patients are pediatric.  Many patients require more than one discipline with roughly 25% of the pediatric population having the medical diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
