March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month – CRMC Providing FIT Kits to Promote Early Detection

During the month of March, Coffeyville Regional Medical Center is promoting Colorectal Cancer Awareness by providing free Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) kits to members of the community age 50 or older.  These kits are available in the Tatman Cancer Center during the month of March.    Colon cancer is 90% curable if caught in the early stages.  Taking an FIT test can help an individual be diagnosed for colon cancer as early as possible and to start lifesaving treatment.

Colon cancer is unique in the medical world.  It is one cancer that can actually be prevented if detected early before cancerous polyps have a chance to grow and spread.  Colon cancer can strike at any age, but 9 out of 10 new cases are in people age 50 or older.  That is why colorectal cancer screening is recommended for men and women over the age of 50 and for anyone with a family history of the disease, regardless of age.

The American Cancer Society’s most recent estimates for the number of colorectal cancer cases in the United States for 2017 are 95,520 new cases of colon cancer and 39,910 new cases of rectal cancer.  They predict that it will cause about 50,260 deaths in 2017. The death rate (the number of deaths per 100,000 people per year) from colorectal cancer has been dropping in both men and women for more than 20 years. The key to improving survival is diagnosing at an early stage with screening.

For more information about the FIT test, contact Vicky Portwood, Director of Outpatient Services and Cancer Center at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center,
620-252-1606 or vportwood@crmcinc.org

COFFEYVILLE REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER HOLDS RIBBON CUTTING FOR EXPANDED & RENOVATED EMERGENCY ROOM

In 2016, the CRMC Emergency Room (ER) had more than 12,000 patient visits, which equates to about 32 patients per day. CRMC has experienced considerable growth since 2010 when they had just over 8,000 emergency room patient visits. With patients now traveling to CRMC from all parts of Montgomery, Elk, Wilson and Nowata Counties this trend is expected to grow with projections that the ER will see more than 13,000 patients in 2017.

To facilitate the best possible care and expedite patients wait time, the ER remodel included adding a treatment room, a triage room and having bed-side registration. With the ultimate goal of reducing the amount of time each patient will spend waiting for treatment in the ER.Family and friends of patients will also experience a new and improved waiting area that features a new furniture, vending, and bathrooms. In addition you will also notice new signage above the Emergency Room Entrance and the addition of one more private treatment room. The ER has also added an infusion room with two infusion chairs for patients who need IV therapy.

CRMC is proud to partner with the Green Country Emergency Room Physician Group for patient care in the ER. These physicians are board certified/eligible in emergency medicine. Emergency medicine physicians are specifically trained to treat patients in an emergent situation. Having Emergency Medicine physicians in our Emergency Room sets CRMC apart from other local facilities. Adding to the comfort of having ER trained physicians to care for our patients, these physicians have quick access to imaging, radiology, lab services and even surgery should there be a need – on site.

“CRMC has several assets working together to allow us to offer complete patient care within our community for many of our patients,” said Dr. Mark Woodring, Chief Executive Officer of CRMC. “This remodel allows us to best use the space so our staff can have the best possible environment to care for our patients and address all of their needs.”

We have a new, larger triage area for patients, and with the support of Attorney General Derek Schmidt, new displays that help our communities recognize the hidden signs and deplorable symptoms of human trafficking. CRMC has also re-opened the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner/Sexual Assault (SANE/SART) program. No one wants to think about, or prepare for sexual assault, however CRMC is dedicated to providing immediate, compassionate, and culturally sensitive care to all victims of sexual assault. In addition, the professional nurse experts will provide comprehensive forensic evaluation and treatment according to state and international policies. CRMC staff will work closely with law enforcement officers and staff of the Crisis Resource Center to best care for victims. CRMC will be able to meet the needs of sexual assault victims in providing treatment as well as collecting valuable evidence that may help prosecute their abuser.
“Domestic violence is a traumatic experience for any victim both male and female. CRMC recognized the need for the SANE program after Mercy Independence closed. These victims have had to travel outside of the county to start supportive services including the SANE Exam by trained registered nurses,” said Lori Rexwinkle, RN, MSN, CRMC Director of Nursing. “The partnership with the Safehouse Crisis Center and their staff is crucial for these victims to have an advocate and begin recovery.”
