Coffeyville Regional Medical Center plans to hold April Session of Safesitter, babysitting course

Coffeyville Regional Medical Center is offering Safesitter classes throughout the year on Saturdays. The first session will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2019 from 9:30am until 4:30pm, located in the 4th Floor Conference Room at CRMC.  If you are interested in the April session, please register by Thursday, April 11th and pay at time of registration. Please bring a sack lunch as the class will go into the lunch hour. The cost of the program is $35, and registration is required.  Limited space available, if you would like to get your child registered please call 620-252-2201 or email Ashley Tatman at ashleyt@crmcinc.org.

The Safe Sitter program is a medically accurate instructional program which includes basic information on babysitting, first aid instruction, behavior management, and child development facts for children ages infant to school age.  The class is intended for both boys and girls 11 to 13 years old who are interested in babysitting.  The curriculum is extremely active and hands-on and features babysitting scenarios as a way for the participants to learn how to react to problems they may encounter while sitting with a child.

A large segment of the program concentrates on Infant and Child CPR and Choking Rescue.  Round table discussions are held to cover four aspects of babysitting:  Nap/Night time; Eating; Activities and Toileting. They receive information on child development and age appropriate activities.

Another large component of the program is centered on safety for the sitter.  Sitters are trained to check all references before accepting a job to protect them from going to a strange home.  They are taught to ask the important information they need when babysitting at someone else’s home in case of the need to contact either EMS, an available adult to help, or how to contact the parents if needed. They learn safety and security precautions, such as what to do if a stranger comes to the door and when and how to call for help.

The goal of Safe Sitter is to prepare young adolescents for the responsibilities of nurturing and protecting children, and to reduce the number of accidental and preventable deaths among children being cared for by babysitters.

Coffeyville Regional Medical Center First in the Region to Offer Breast Health Nurse Navigator and Genius 3D Mammography Exams

[Coffeyville, Kansas]  Coffeyville Regional Medical Center is excited to offer Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exams, developed by Hologic, Inc., a worldwide leader in Women’s Health. Utilizing advanced breast tomosynthesis technology, Genius exams are clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancers, and decreasing the number of women asked to return for additional testing. “CRMC is committed to the fight against breast cancer. In offering the Genius exam, we provide a more accurate tool for breast cancer screening” says Lori Rexwinkle, CEO. “And having a Breast Health Nurse Navigator to guide our patients is an important missing piece for patients with abnormal mammograms.”

In conventional 2D Mammography, overlapping tissue is a leading reason why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal, leading to unnecessary callbacks. A Genius 3D exam includes a three-dimensional method of imaging that can greatly reduce the tissue overlap effect.

A Genius 3D exam includes both 2D images and tomosynthesis scans. During the tomosynthesis-DIMENSIONAL portion of the exam, an X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images. A computer then converts the images into a stack of thin layers, allowing the radiologist to review the breast tissue one layer at a time. A Genius 3D exam requires no additional compression and takes just a few seconds longer than a conventional 2D breast cancer screening exam.

  • The Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exam finds 20-65% more invasive breast cancers compared to 2D alone, an average increase of 41%.
  • Only the Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exam is FDA approved as superior for women with dense breasts compared to 2D alone.
  • The Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exam reduces callbacks by up to 40% compared to 2D alone.

About Genius™ 3D Mammography™ Exams

The breast is a three-dimensional object composed of different structures located at different heights within the breast. These structures can overlap and cause confusion when viewed as a flat two-dimensional image. This confusion of overlapping of tissue is a leading reason why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal, leading to unnecessary callbacks. Using breast tomosynthesis technology, the Hologic system creates a 3-dimensional image of the breast structure, which enables radiologists to more clearly see through overlapping tissue to detect cancers, often at an earlier stage.

The Hologic system is the first FDA-approved breast tomosynthesis system in the U.S. Hologic Genius 3D Mammography™ exams are now available in all 50 states and over 50 countries. To date, more than 8 million women have been screened with this advanced screening system.

Coffeyville Regional Medical Center Welcomes General Surgeon Aaron Russell, MD to the Medical Staff

Coffeyville Regional Medical Center welcomes Aaron Russell, MD to the medical staff. He completed medical school at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 2013, and recently completed his General Surgery Residency at Texas A&M University in Temple, Texas (located north of Austin, Texas).   Prior to going to school to become a physician, Dr. Russell worked in Engineering at companies involved in research and development, some of which were working on medical advancements.

Asked why he decided to become a physician, Dr. Russell said, “My undergraduate degree was in Electrical Engineering.  I worked at Lockheed Martin in New Jersey for a year, and then Texas Instruments in Houston, Texas for the next five years.  I had friends in college who told me to do pre-med because I wouldn’t have to take many additional courses.  I initially told them that I hated biology in high school and didn’t want to do it again.  However, while I was working in New Jersey, I decided to take a night Biology course.  I loved it!  With my engineering background and learning how things work, I was completely enthralled by the sophisticated systems that were designed within our bodies to work in harmony with each other.  I chose surgery because I enjoyed the intimacy and connection the surgeon has with his or her patient.  The patient puts utmost trust in the surgeon to relieve their illness by placing their life in his or her hands.”

Dr. Russell chose to practice at CRMC because he said he liked Coffeyville from the moment he came here… “Everyone I interacted with was extremely caring and friendly.  It was evident that all the staff at CRMC was very proud of their facility and cared much about their patients.  I wanted to be in a facility in which that kind of atmosphere was very prevalent. Dr. Russell will be performing general surgery procedures such as gallbladders, appendectomies, hernias, colonic surgery and upper/lower endoscopy.
