The Board of Directors at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center (CRMC) announce the appointment of Brian Lawrence, MHA, as Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Board Chairman Neal Barkley stated, “The Board is pleased to announce the hiring of Brian Lawrence as CEO. He brings a vast amount of experience, and will be an engaged leader with the CRMC team and the communities we serve.”

Coffeyville Regional Medical Center is offering a new class called Safe@Home. Safe@Home provides excellent instruction on staying safe inside the house, outside the house, online, and with others. The class is designed for students in grades 4th-6th to equip them to be safe when they are home alone. Safe@Home is a 90-minute program and requires each child to have a Safe @ Home student booklet. Some of the topics they will learn:

• How to prevent unsafe situations
• What to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies
• Students are also introduced to the Safe Sitter® First Aid Chart and learn a system to help them assess and respond to injuries and illnesses.

Coffeyville Regional Medical Center has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in 3D mammography as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Mammography is a specific type of imaging test that uses a low-dose X-ray system to examine breasts. A mammography exam, called a mammogram, is used to aid in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases in women.

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Parameters and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report that can be used for continuous practice improvement.

The ACR, founded in 1924, is a professional medical society dedicated to serving patients and society by empowering radiology professionals to advance the practice, science and professions of radiological care. The College serves more than 37,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.

Coffeyville Regional Medical Center (CRMC) today announced it has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Hospital Accreditation by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Gold Seal of Approval® is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care.

CRMC underwent a rigorous, unannounced onsite survey in December. During the review, a team of Joint Commission expert surveyors evaluated compliance with hospital standards related to several areas, including emergency management, environment of care, infection prevention and control, leadership, and medication management. Surveyors also conducted onsite observations and interviews.
The Joint Commission has accredited hospitals for more than 60 years. More than 4,000 general, children’s, long-term acute, psychiatric, rehabilitation and specialty hospitals currently maintain accreditation from The Joint Commission, awarded for a three-year period. In addition, approximately 360 critical access hospitals maintain accreditation through a separate program.

“Joint Commission accreditation provides hospitals with the processes needed to improve in a variety of areas from the enhancement of staff education to the improvement of daily business operations,” said Mark G. Pelletier, RN, MS, chief operating officer, Division of Accreditation and Certification Operations, The Joint Commission. “In addition, our accreditation helps hospitals enhance their risk management and risk reduction strategies. We commend CRMC for its efforts in being a quality improvement organization.”

– provide a safe environment for your care
– educate you about the risks and options for your diagnosis and treatment
– protect your rights as a patient, including your privacy rights
– evaluate your condition, before, during and after diagnosis and treatment
– protect you against infection
– plan for emergency situations

The Joint Commission’s hospital standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. The standards are informed by scientific literature and expert consensus to help hospitals measure, assess and improve performance.

Coffeyville Regional Medical Center is offering Safesitter in June. The Summer session will be held June 8^th.  This session will be held on Saturday, June 8th from 9:30am until 4:30pm, located in the 4^th Floor Conference Center at CRMC.  If you are interested in the June session, please register by Thursday, June 6th and pay at time of registration. Please bring a sack lunch as the class will go into the lunch hour. The Safe Sitter program is a medically accurate instructional program which includes basic information on babysitting, first aid instruction, behavior management, and child development facts for children ages infant to school age.  The class is intended for both boys and girls 11 to 13 years old who are interested in babysitting.  The curriculum is extremely active and hands-on and features babysitting scenarios as a way for the participants to learn how to react to problems they may encounter while sitting with a child.

A large segment of the program concentrates on Infant and Child CPR and Choking Rescue.  Round table discussions are held to cover four aspects of babysitting:  Nap/Night time; Eating; Activities and Toileting. They receive information on child development and age appropriate activities.

Another large component of the program is centered on safety for the sitter.  Sitters are trained to check all references before accepting a job to protect them from going to a strange home.  They are taught to ask the important information they need when babysitting at someone else’s home in case of the need to contact either EMS, an available adult to help, or how to contact the parents if needed. They learn safety and security precautions, such as what to do if a stranger comes to the door and when and how to call for help.

The goal of Safe Sitter is to prepare young adolescents for the responsibilities of nurturing and protecting children, and to reduce the number of accidental and preventable deaths among children being cared for by babysitters.

Coffeyville Regional Medical Center is proud to announce Michelle McGuirk, MD – General Surgeon – has received her Board Certification by the American College of Surgeons.

“Being Board Certified is important to me and should be important to my patients and community. It’s a way of showing my dedication to reaching the highest standard of care – enabling optimal quality of care for my patients”, said McGuirk. Board Certification by the American College of Surgeons demonstrates a physician’s exceptional expertise in their field.

Dr. McGuirk joined the CRMC medical staff in 2017 and brought the latest general surgery techniques and procedures to our facility. After working in basic-science research, as well as biomedical device engineering, Dr. McGuirk decided she wanted to see how her work could directly benefit patients. “I attended medical school so that I could interact with, and impact patients and their families,” said Dr. McGuirk.

Beginning in 2008, Dr. McGuirk attended the University of Colorado Medical School in Aurora. Following medical school, she moved to Wichita where she was a Senior Surgical Resident at the Wichita Center for Graduate Medical Education. She graduated from the program and moved to Coffeyville to practice as a General Surgeon at CRMC. “It’s just a great fit,” said Dr. McGuirk. “I want to stay in Coffeyville and make a noticeable impact. I feel very natural here and I have positive interactions with staff and providers here at CRMC.”

This year Coffeyville Regional Medical Center is teaming up with our local Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Kansas to host a day camp and health fair for our youth in the community, Camp Blue Mission and O.K. Kids Health and Safety Fair. Our local Boys and Girls Club chapter provides a program called Keystone. Keystone is the Boys & Girls Club Movement’s ultimate teen program for youth ages 14 to 18. This unique program provides leadership development opportunities for youth to participate in activities, both in and out of the Club, in three focus areas: academic success, career preparation and community service. With the guidance of an adult advisor, Keystone Clubs aim to positively impact teens, their Club and local communities.

Each year, the Keystone group is in charge of a big project that helps the community and this year they are helping put on this event. During the day camp, the youth of Boys and Girls club will show what is offered at our local club. There will be a chance for some hands on learning and educational time.

Coffeyville Regional Medical Center is excited to partner with our local youth and to continue to provide an educational event to our town of Coffeyville.

Camp Blue Mission and O.K. Kids Health and Safety Fair will be held the first Saturday in May.

It is free, for children pre-school age and up, and is designed to educate kids about health and safety.  The “Under the Sea Adventure” is the theme this year and it is sure to be a lot of fun.

Exhibits will be set up both indoors and out.  Outdoor exhibits include police cars, fire trucks and ambulance.  A helicopter will also land during the event to let kids see the inside of a medical helicopter.

Indoors there will be lots of exhibits from area businesses and organizations.  Fun activities such as inflatable jumpers that the kids can bounce around in will be sure to keep them entertained.   Of course, OK Kids wouldn’t be same without the Kansas Kutie Clowns and their famous balloon hats. There will be tons of prizes that will be given away throughout the morning, including two bicycles. Coffeyville Regional Medical Center and The Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Kansas will be handing out goody bags to all kids who come to the event. Bring the kids out on Saturday, May 4th for a morning of fun and learning.
