CRMC adds High Tech Camera to Surgery Department

Dr. Michelle McGuirk, CRMC General Surgeon, is using the latest technology in laparoscopic cameras and technology in the CRMC Surgery Department. She is currently using the Stryker 1588 AIM Platform camera, which is designed with five distinct advanced imaging modalities that allow surgeons to see more and do more during surgery. Each modality was developed through surgeon feedback with an emphasis on patient safety. With advanced imaging, the Platform camera is designed to improve the ability to identify critical anatomy, as well as increase efficiencies in operating procedures. The 1588 AIM platform offers nine surgical specialties to optimize color and lighting settings by user and specialty.

The 1588 AIM (advanced imaging modalities) is the next generation visualization platform. The 1588 AIM platform includes a number of technological advancements changing the way the surgeon visualizes the surgical field. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month CRMC Providing FIT Kits to Promote Early Detection

During the month of March, Coffeyville Regional Medical Center is promoting Colorectal Cancer Awareness by providing free Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) kits to members of the community age 50 or older. These kits are available in the Tatman Cancer Center during the month of March. Colon cancer is 90% curable if caught in the early stages. Taking an FIT test can help an individual be diagnosed for colon cancer as early as possible and to start lifesaving treatment.

Colon cancer is unique in the medical world. It is one cancer that can actually be prevented if detected early before cancerous polyps have a chance to grow and spread. Colon cancer can strike at any age, but 9 out of 10 new cases are in people age 50 or older. That is why colorectal cancer screening is recommended for men and women over the age of 50 and for anyone with a family history of the disease, regardless of age.
The American Cancer Society’s most recent estimates for the number of colorectal cancer cases in the United States for 2017 are 95,520 new cases of colon cancer and 39,910 new cases of rectal cancer. They predict that it will cause about 50,260 deaths in 2017. The death rate (the number of deaths per 100,000 people per year) from colorectal cancer has been dropping in both men and women for more than 20 years. The key to improving survival is diagnosing at an early stage with screening.
For more information about the FIT test, contact Vicky Portwood, Director of Outpatient Services and Cancer Center at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center, 620-252-1606.

CRMC Participates in the Little Hats, Big Hearts Campaign

Babies born during the month of February at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center (CRMC) will be given a special gift from the heart. CRMC is participating in the Little Hats, Big Hearts campaign sponsored by the American Heart Association. All babies born in February will be given a very special red hat in honor of American Heart Month.

Little Hats, Big Hearts campaign, is a campaign where volunteers from around the country have joined the American Heart Association, in connection with The Children’s Heart Foundation, to celebrate American Heart Month by knitting and crocheting red hats for babies born in February at participating hospitals. Little Hats, Big HeartsTM, honors babies, moms, and heart healthy lives in a very special way. Supporters have knitted and crocheted red hats to be given out to thousands of babies during American Heart Month in order to empower moms to live heart healthy lives and to help their children do the same.

Together, we are working to raise awareness, provide resources and inspire moms to take their family’s heart health to heart while also raising awareness about Congenital Heart Defects.

We will be sharing photos of the babies born in February on our Facebook page, wearing these red hats. www.facebook.com/CoffeyvilleRegionalMedicalCenter

CRMC Welcomes Michelle A. McGuirk, MD – General Surgeon

Coffeyville Regional Medical Center is pleased to announce the addition of Michelle McGuirk, MD, General Surgeon, to the medical staff and CRMC Medical Group.

“Our organization is very excited about Dr. McGuirk joining CRMC Medical Group,” said Dr. Mark Woodring, CEO of Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. “In addition to the latest general surgery techniques and procedures, she brings an incredible enthusiasm and patient-centered approach to our hospital and clinics. Please join us in welcoming her to Coffeyville and southeast Kansas.”

After working in basic-science research, as well as biomedical device engineering, Dr. Michelle A. McGuirk decided she wanted to see how her work could directly benefit patients. “I attended medical school so that I could interact with, and impact patients and their families,” said Dr. McGuirk.

Beginning in 2008, Dr. McGuirk attended the University of Colorado Medical School in Aurora. Following medical school, she moved to Wichita where she was a Senior Surgical Resident at the Wichita Center for Graduate Medical Education. She recently graduated from the program and moved to Coffeyville to practice as a General Surgeon at CRMC. “It just felt like we would be a good fit,” said Dr. McGuirk. “I wanted to stay in Kansas and find a place where I could make a noticeable impact. It felt very natural and I had positive interactions with staff and providers when I came to Coffeyville.”

While she enjoys a broad variety of surgical cases, she is trained to perform many cases laparoscopically and takes great pride in cosmetically pleasing closures for all patients.

Dr. McGuirk also likes to spend a little extra time developing relationships with her patients. “When a patient undergoes surgery, I want to be able to know something about them,” said Dr. McGuirk. “Being a surgeon is an absolute privilege for me.” She has always loved working with her hands, whether painting, gardening, knitting, or working on cars. “Surgery is a field that requires precision with your hands and intuition — it’s a gratifying way to improve a patient’s quality of life,” said Dr. McGuirk.

Dr. McGuirk is located at CRMC Medical Group – Specialty Clinic, 1400 W. 4th Street (3rd Floor of CRMC). For more information, please call 620-252-1639.
